1991: Hola
Before she was rescued, Hola was sentenced to a lifetime behind bars in a pet shop. This chatty, intelligent macaw would have had to endure unbearable loneliness and anxiety in a tiny cage, deprived of the opportunity to fulfill her innate needs to socialize and fly. Like many caged birds, she could have ended up terrified of people, screaming, rocking, and bobbing her head constantly out of fear and frustration. It is likely that she would have been sold to someone who did not understand her needs and would have subjected her to a home version of the same dismal destiny.
Luckily, Hola flew the coop and was taken to a loving home at Aspin Hill sanctuary, which was formerly owned by PETA. The office staff became accustomed to hearing, "Telephone!" every time the phone rang. She shared a spacious aviary with her cockatoo buddy, Cory, and filled the air with her regular refrain, "I love you, Cory."
One of her favorite pastimes was whistling for the dogs, who would then rush to stand in front of the aviary. She also became the official greeter, welcoming visitors with "Hello" in a dozen different voices.
